The city was earlier called Narmadapur after the Narmada river. Later the name was changed to Hoshangabad after Hoshang Shah Gori, the first ruler of Malwa Sultanate..

కృష్ణాజిల్లా మచిలీపట్నంలో శతాధిక దేవాలయాలు ఉన్నాయి. వాటిలో నిజాం పేట లోని బొబ్బిలి వేణుగోపాల స్వామి వారి దేవాలయము విశిష్టతను సంతరించుకున్నది. విజయనగరం జిల్లా బొబ్బిలి రాజావారి కోట ఇలవేల్పుగా ఈ స్వామి వారు పూజలు అందుకునేవారు 1756వ సంవత్సరంలో ఆంగ్లేయుల ప్రభుత్వ కాలంలో జరిగిన ముస్లిం దండయాత్రలలో స్వామివారి విగ్రహానికి భంగం కలుగుతుందని భావించిన కోటలో పనిచేస్తున్న మచిలీపట్టణానికి చెందిన కొందరు సైనికులు విగ్రహాన్ని పెళ్ళగించారు. మచిలీపట్టణంలో రుస్తుం బాదా ప్రాంత వాస్తవ్యుడైన దూబాసి లక్ష్మయ్య మచిలీపట్నంలో స్వామి వారిని ప్రతిష్టించాలనే కోరికతో రాజు అనుమతి లేకుండానే మచిలీపట్నానికి బొబ్బిలి నుండి విగ్రహాన్ని తీసుకువచ్చారు.

నులక మంచాన్ని త్రిప్పి శ్రీగోపీవల్లభుని అందు పరుండబెట్టి తీసుకువస్తుండగా అడ్డగించిన ఆంగ్లేయ సైనికులకు జబ్బుపడిన వ్యక్తిని తీసుకు వెళ్తున్నామని తెలిపారు. అనుమానం వచ్చిన ఆ సైనికులు పిలవగానే మూలుగు వినిపించిందట. ఈ సంగతి తెలిసిన బొబ్బిలి రాజావారు సంతోషించి సతీ సమేతంగా ఇక్కడికి విచ్చేసి స్వామి వారిని ప్రతిష్ఠింప చేసినారు. నాటినుండి ఈ స్వామి వారు పిలిస్తే పలికే దైవంగా సంతాన ప్రదులుగా ప్రసిద్ధి గాంచారు. ఈ విధంగా బొబ్బిలి నుండి కాలినడకన మచిలీపట్నం శ్రీస్వామివారి విగ్రహము తీసుకుని వచ్చుటకు 21 రోజులు పట్టిందని చెబుతారు. అందుకే నేటికీ కృష్ణాష్టమి వేడుకలను 21 రోజులు సాంప్రదాయబద్ధంగా నిర్వహిస్తుంటారు.
